Mountain View, CA (September 12, 2016)– Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that the Daily Journal has named Patent Group Chair Rajiv Patel among California’s top 100 intellectual property lawyers for the third consecutive year. The annual list recognizes the state’s 75 leading IP litigators and the 25 leading portfolio managers and patent prosecution lawyers.
Among California’s top 25 patent prosecutors, Patel is a go-to attorney for emerging technology powerhouses. His client list includes cutting-edge innovators like GoPro, Twitter and Peel Technologies.
“Patel’s track record with emerging companies is established and he continues to counsel young innovators,” the Journal reported in its profile of Patel. “Along with Fenwick’s corporate group, Patel has counseled dozens of Silicon Valley companies from company formation to exit.”
No client represents Patel’s growth with a company more than GoPro, with whom he began working when it was just a strap to hold a camera in place on a customer’s wrist. Patel continued to serve as the company’s IP advisor as it grew, with Fenwick also counseling GoPro on the corporate side. At GoPro’s 2014 initial public offering, Patel stood with GoPro’s leaders on Wall Street.
The Daily Journal also highlighted Patel’s work with Peel Technologies, Inc., a startup backed by the Alibaba, the world’s largest online and mobile commerce company.
Patel has prosecuted five patents for Peel so far. Starting as an app that turned smartphones into TV remotes, Peel now transforms smartphones and tablets into a one-stop controller for internet enabled appliances.
“Patel takes a keen approach in advising the business interests of a company’s intellectual property profile,” the Journal reported. “He manages their IP profiles in a surgical way.”
“A company can wrap a large bill for patent services if the advice given isn’t strategic,” Patel told the Journal. “What’s key is targeting the underlying technology that will position them in the market and figuring out what the key IP is with that technology. Patents aren’t necessarily the right answer for protecting company technology at all times.”
Patel’s strategic approach to counseling his patent clients has received significant recognition. Since 2012, Intellectual Asset Management has named him as one of the world’s leading patent practitioners in its IAM Patent 1000 guide.
