Fenwick Patent Group Named the Best in Western North America by Managing IP

Mountain View, CA (July 28, 2015)– Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that the firm’s patent prosecution group has been named the best in Western North America by Managing Intellectual Property. Fenwick’s patent practice, one of the largest in California, supports the patent portfolios of some of the most well-known, cutting-edge companies in the world, including high tech companies like Facebook, Twitter, LG Display, Honda, Synopsys, GoPro and Dropbox and life sciences companies like Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Juno Therapeutics, Dermira and Moderna Therapeutics.

In a profile of the firm published earlier this year, Managing IP called Fenwick “an industry leader in representing technology innovators” and noted that the firm’s “small geographical footprint belies a robust national practice which includes many high-profile clients with complex matters of patent litigation, patent prosecution and appearances before the ITC.”

Fenwick patent practitioners hold advanced technical degrees and actual business experience in disciplines such as chemistry, molecular biology, electrical engineering and computer science.

Because Fenwick clients are developing technologies in new industries like social networking, Fenwick attorneys are often laying the groundwork for new areas of law when developing client patent portfolios.

“We’re so pleased to have received this recognition of our work,” said Rajiv Patel, chair of Fenwick’s patent team. “We wouldn’t be able to develop groundbreaking patent portfolios if it weren’t for the disruptive technologies of our clients. We feel lucky to get to work with such inspiring and courageous entrepreneurs.”

Patent portfolios built for start-up clients like Adap.tv and Skyfire Labs are often later part of multimillion dollar acquisitions by companies like Oracle and AOL.

The government has taken notice of the importance of the legal IP knowledge coming out of Fenwick. Two former Fenwick partners are now high ranking advisors on IP law: Michelle Lee, head of the USPTO, is a former Fenwick partner, and another former Fenwick attorney and later IP Scholar, Colleen Chien, up until very recently was the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy senior advisor for IP and innovation to Todd Park, the U.S. chief technology officer.

Fenwick is a founding member of the steering committee established to assist the USPTO in launching the Northern California Pro Bono Patent Program, which provides low-cost legal services to under-resourced inventors and small businesses that need help obtaining patents.
