Fenwick's Trademark Practice Ranked as One of the Top in the US by WTR 1000

Partners Sally Abel, Andrew Bridges, Connie Ellerbach, Jedediah Wakefield and Karen Webb received top rankings from World Trademark Review

Mountain View, CA (January 26, 2015) – Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that the firm and its partners continue to receive the highest rankings from World Trademark Review 1000 for outstanding work in trademark prosecution and strategy as well as enforcement and litigation.

Fenwick is one of only three U.S. law firms with trademark attorneys ranked in the first tier nationally for both prosecution and enforcement.

Fenwick's team "provides a comprehensive trademark offering, while also maintaining a thriving due diligence practice in support of mergers and acquisitions," WTR writes in its profile of the firm, continuing, "nothing brand-related is beyond its capabilities."

As for the firm's client list in trademark matters – a roster that includes Alibaba, Twitter and Facebook – WTR says, "Fenwick & West safeguards the trademarks of some of the world’s most valuable internet brands."

These acknowledgements come at a time when the competition among U.S. trademark law practitioners is characterized by WTR as "more intense than ever."

Sally Abel, Fenwick's trademark chair, again receives two first-tier rankings. Abel is listed among the top seven trademark attorneys for prosecution and strategy in the United States. Her trademark prosecution practice also earns the highest possible ranking amongst California practitioners.

"Sally puts everyone in the shade. She accepts risks as a natural part of doing business and shares her clients' commercial priorities," writes WTR.

Also recognized by WTR with double gold rankings is partner Andrew Bridges, who is acknowledged among a handful of litigation attorneys in the first tier nationwide for trademark enforcement as well as in California for enforcement and litigation. Bridges' clients say he "represents exciting brand owners and is doing really innovative work, constantly pushing at boundaries."

Most recently, Bridges is representing General Motors in a proposed nationwide class action brought by the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies (AARC) regarding a CD player installed in GM vehicles.

With high marks for her approach to trademark prosecution and strategy, partner Connie Ellerbach's practice "runs the gamut," WTR says, adding that online enforcement is "a particular area of dexterity."

Like Bridges, partner Jedediah Wakefield, chair of Fenwick's intellectual property and litigation group, is ranked in the first tier for his trademark enforcement and litigation work in California. A "courtroom ace," Wakefield "gives clear, pragmatic advice that really takes into consideration particular budget and business aims," WTR writes.

New to the guide this year is partner Karen Webb. An "international trademark and domain development expert," Webb is listed among both the leading trademark enforcement and trademark prosecution attorneys in California. WTR's profile calls her "a font of creative solutions when challenges and restraints present themselves."

World Trademark Review 1000 – The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals is an annual guide published by World Trademark Review honoring the top law firms and lawyers working on trademark prosecution and enforcement matters. In compiling the rankings, WTR 1000 researchers consider information provided from law firms on their work over the past year, insight from other legal professionals and the perspective of the clients benefitting from their work.
