New Fenwick Associate Sarah Mirza Named Top U.S. IP Law Student

Mountain View, CA (September 29, 2015) – Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that associate Sarah Mirza received the 2015 Jan Jancin Award given annually to the top intellectual property law student in the United States.

Given by the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation (AIPLEF) of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the award honors one U.S. law student each year who has displayed excellence in the study of IP law.

“We are incredibly proud of Sarah’s accomplishments and believe this honor is well-deserved,” Fenwick Patent Practice chair Rajiv Patel said. “She is an excellent asset to the Fenwick team and shows incredible dedication, creativity and passion for the legal field.”

Mirza worked at Fenwick as a patent engineer and a summer associate while attending Santa Clara University’s School of Law part time. She has now joined the firm full time as an associate in Fenwick’s Intellectual Property Group, helping companies build out patent portfolios.

“The obvious draw to Fenwick is the stellar client base. I can’t think of another firm that represents so many of the companies whose technology I personally use,” Mirza said. “I also appreciate that people at Fenwick share their knowledge and experiences openly and without hesitation. That's allowed me to learn so much more than if I was navigating the waters on my own.”

Before law school, Mirza earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Upon completion of her undergraduate program, she joined Oracle as a software engineer.

“Sarah’s strong technical background and first-hand experience as an engineer gives her an invaluable perspective through which to solve complicated legal issues surrounding technical patents,” Fenwick patent partner Stuart Meyer said.

At Fenwick, Mirza has worked with leading technology companies such as Twitter, as well as cutting-edge startups. She also authored a paper titled “Thwarting ‘The Great Patent Revolution’ in Your Engineering Organization” that advised in-house counsel on best practices for engaging their engineers in the patent process.

Upon graduation, she was honored with Santa Clara University’s Mabie Award for the Outstanding Graduate of her class.
