Mountain View, CA (April 11, 2013) – Law360 named partner Robert Hulse to its annual list of Rising Stars, “attorneys under 40 whose legal accomplishments belie their age,” out of nearly 1,000 submissions.
Hulse is a member of a small population of patent prosecution attorneys who can write, prosecute and sell patents, which, according to Law360, “put[s] him [in] a position to handle patent applications for several of the fundamental building blocks of social media.”
Though it is exciting to work for social media companies who are, as he says, “really blazing a trail,” his patent expertise does not end there. Hulse has worked on patent applications in a myriad of spheres: from electronics and computer software to medical devices and financial products.
He said that his interest in the profession started at the young age of 16 when he learned that patent prosecutors are paid to learn about “fun, cool, interesting technology” and then write about it. “The conversation was five minutes, but it shaped the rest of my life.”
Today, Hulse can count among his clients Facebook, HTC, Virgin Mobile and dozens of up-and-coming start-ups like Livescribe, RockMelt and Delphix.
"Companies like Facebook are much more comfortable with someone my age, who still has a decade under their belt of practicing but can go in there and understand the startup corporate culture and whatever technology is new and hot among the engineers and inventors,” he said.
This year, Hulse was also named to the Daily Journal’s annual Top 20 Under 40 list.
