Star Antitrust Lawyer Tyler Baker Joins Fenwick & West Litigation Group

June 2, 2003 (Mountain View, CA) - Fenwick & West LLP announced today that Tyler Baker III is joining the firm as a partner in the Litigation Group effective immediately. In 2002, Baker was designated the "go-to" lawyer in Texas for Antitrust by Texas Lawyer. The award was based on interviews with lawyers and clients throughout the state. In both 2003 and 2001, D Magazine named Baker one of the "Best Lawyers in Dallas" in Antitrust based upon a ballot of 3,000 lawyers in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

"Texas' loss is Fenwick & West's gain," commented Gordon K. Davidson, firm chairman. "I have known Tyler since law school and have followed his stellar career with admiration and respect. As clients in our marketplace mature, it is just the right time to add someone of Tyler's stature to our antitrust litigation practice. Although it is now a cliché to describe someone as 'uniquely qualified,' Tyler's deep knowledge of antitrust and intellectual property law and his extensive trial experience when combined with his intellectual ability, and business acumen make him truly just that. He is a terrific addition to our team and a perfect fit for us."

"It's impossible to overstate the appeal of practicing at Fenwick & West," said Baker. "The opportunity to join a practice which allows me to practice in both my primary legal fields, antitrust and intellectual property, and to practice them with a business base that is raising cutting-edge issues in these areas of law is irresistible. I very much look forward to working from this new platform."

Baker comes to Fenwick & West from the Dallas, TX law firm of Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal, where he was head of the Antitrust Practice Group. Baker's trial practice there included representation of both plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of civil antitrust cases as well as the representation of individuals and businesses which were the subject of state and/or federal investigations. He also brings deep expertise in intellectual property cases, including trade secrets, trademarks, trade dress, unfair competition and related business torts. His clients have included Coca-Cola, EDS, General Motors and Sears.

From 1978 to 1981, Baker taught courses at the University of Virginia Law School in both antitrust and intellectual property law. From 1981 to 1982, he served as Special Assistant to William F. Baxter, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice, where he had primary responsibility for the revisions of the Antitrust Division Merger Guidelines that continue to be the analytical framework for regulation of mergers today.

Baker is admitted to practice in California and Texas. He received his J.D. in 1975 from Stanford Law School, where he served on the Board of Editors of Stanford Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. Following graduation, he served as Law Clerk to Judge Charles B. Renfrew, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (1975 - 1976) and to Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr., U.S. Supreme Court (1976-1977).
