Legal Services Corporation Board Meeting & 40th Anniversary Closing Events

The Legal Services Corporation (www.lsc.gov) was created in 1974, and is the single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans, providing federal grants to 134 non-profit legal aid organizations.  LSC’s grantees have to turn away more than half of eligible applicants for lack of resources, and the nation’s courts are crowded with an ever-increasing number of individuals proceeding pro se.

As we conclude this milestone anniversary, almost 64 million Americans—one in five—are eligible for civil legal aid. The gap between the need for legal aid and the ability of legal aid providers to meet that need is widening.
