August 17, 2010 (Mountain View, CA) - Fenwick & West LLP strengthened its commitment to sustainability and innovation by becoming the first law firm in the U.S. to install networked electric vehicle charging stations in its main parking facility.
The ChargePoint stations, unveiled today, were developed by Coulomb Technologies and installed in pre-designated parking spaces for electric vehicles. They connect to an advanced monitoring system that generates station usage, energy consumption and greenhouse gas statistics for both charging stations and vehicles. Drivers can receive these updates via SMS or email alerts.
Senior Director of Facilities Julie O'Loughlin said, "We hope that our electric vehicle initiative will further the emerging wave of electric-powered cars in the marketplace and make our parking facility more accessible to electric vehicle drivers. Electric vehicles release almost no air pollutants, generate less noise pollution, and can be up to three times more efficient than vehicles with standard internal combustion engines."
In 2002, Fenwick & West moved its headquarters to downtown Mountain View so that public transportation, shops, restaurants and businesses would be conveniently accessible to employees as well as visiting clients. In addition, the centrally-located office significantly reduced the overall commute time of many Fenwick employees and attorneys.
Currently, Fenwick & West engages in the following alternative transportation programs:
- 5% of available garage parking spaces reserved for hybrid and carpool vehicles
- Full reimbursement for staff who commute by public transportation
- Secure bike parking and onsite showers
- RideSpring, a new alternative commuting initiative offered to firm employees and attorneys. This incentive-based commuting program awards raffle prizes to those who participate in alternative forms of transportation. The program also provides the firm with reporting tools that measure employee participation in alternative transportation.
Fenwick & West has a long history of emphasizing green initiatives and reducing energy and resource consumption when possible, leading other law firms in internal efforts to adopt environmentally sustainable solutions. The firm officially established a "Green Team" of partners, associates, executive management and staff in 2007 to focus on sustainable environmental initiatives and ensure compliance with external certification programs. The firm was the first to be certified by Santa Clara County as an environmentally sustainable "Green Business," and in 2009 became the first LEED-certified law firm in the United States for their Seattle office (LEED-CI Platinum) and their Mountain View office (LEED-EB Gold). Fenwick & West also sponsors Bike to Work Day with 511.org, staffs a "Bike to Work" energizer station each year and actively promotes Bike to Work Day within the firm.
