Fenwick Named #1 Mid-Market M&A and Buyouts Firm by The Legal 500

Mountain View, CA (June 23,  2015) – Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that The Legal 500 honored Fenwick with its 2015 award for middle market mergers and acquisitions and buyouts law firm of the year.

In determining award recipients, The Legal 500 assesses more than 250,000 corporate counsel globally, based solely on merit, with an emphasis on the depth of the corporate counsel team (practice and associates) rather than merely focusing on “star” individuals.

The announcement of The Legal 500's mid-market award follows closely on the heels of Mergermarket’s report that Fenwick ranked first among law firms globally for volume of technology, media and telecommunications M&A completed during the first quarter of 2015. In addition, Bloomberg ranked Fenwick #2 for volume of mid-market M&A deals during this same period.

In bestowing the award, The Legal 500 recognized that 2014 was a stellar year for Fenwick, with the aggregate value of deals the firm worked on increasing 600 percent from the year before. Observing that Fenwick is "[known] for its eminence in digital media and internet" as well as its "premier technology M&A practice," The Legal 500 added that the firm "provided advice on some of the largest and most significant M&A transactions of 2014."

The strength of Fenwick’s mid-markets M&A practice is well-known throughout the tech industry with the firm working both for large serial acquirers like Facebook, Twitter and Cisco Systems buying startups and startups being acquired by large tech companies like AOL, Google and Oracle. For example, in 2014, Fenwick represented:

  • Skybox Imaging, creators of the world’s smallest high-resolution imaging satellite, in its $500 million sale to Google
  • U.K.-based NaturalMotion in its $391 million sale to Zynga – Zynga’s largest acquisition ever
  • Actuate Corporation in its acquisition by OpenText Corporation for approximately $330 million
  • Bizo in its $175 million sale to LinkedIn Corporation
  • BASIS Science in its acquisition by Intel
  • BlueKai in its acquisition by Oracle
