Fenwick & West was founded in 1972 in the heart of Silicon Valley—before “Silicon Valley” existed—by four visionary lawyers who left a top-tier New York law firm to pursue their shared belief that technology would revolutionize the business world and to pioneer the legal work for those technological innovations. In order to be most effective, they decided they needed to move to a location close to primary research and technology development. These four attorneys opened their first office in downtown Palo Alto, and Fenwick became one of the first technology law firms in the world.  MORE >

Fenwick Receives Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award from U.S. District Court

Mountain View, CA (October 3, 2012) – Fenwick & West was granted the “Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award” last night for its commitment to pro bono services by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California at a reception hosted by the court and Volunteer Legal Services Program of The Bar Association of San Francisco.

The award recognized the work of attorneys Jennifer Johnson, Erin Simon and Lynn Pasahow, along with former Fenwick attorneys, for their representation of 7-year-old Santos Fitzgerald, the son of a San Quentin inmate who died when he received inadequate medical care. Fenwick attorneys dedicated more than 800 hours to the case.

The civil rights suit alleged that doctors failed to properly treat inmate Scott Fitzgerald, who suffered from Type I Diabetes, while he was incarcerated in state prison. Fitzgerald suffered repeated and dramatic drops in blood sugar followed by seizures. After one such event, the doctors neglected to take the proper steps to stabilize his blood sugar. He died in September 2006 at the age of 34. The matter was settled favorably following a decision by the district court denying a motion by the state to escape trial.

In the past year, Fenwick & West attorneys have logged more than 12,000 pro bono hours and have been recognized for both the volume and the quality of their work. To encourage pro bono legal services, Fenwick recognizes all approved pro bono work as "billable" hours for all purposes for non-partner attorneys.
