November 6, 2002 (Palo Alto, CA) - Fenwick & West LLP announced that Michael J. Shuster, 43, will join the firm today as a Partner in its Intellectual Property Group where he will spearhead the biotechnology patent prosecution practice. Shuster brings extensive patent prosecution and counseling experience to Fenwick & West; his clients include startup and established bioscience corporations and research universities and hospitals. He will be resident in the firm's San Francisco office.
Shuster comes to Fenwick & West LLP from the San Francisco office of Bingham McCutchen, where he was employed since 1991. Before becoming a lawyer, his earlier career experience included research in the laboratory of Professor Eric Kandel at Columbia University as part of a team focused on discovery of mechanisms by which short-term memories are stored, research for which Professor Kandel was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Shuster then moved to the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, where he pursued his interests in ion channel biophysics and protein structure, first as a Markey post-doctoral fellow, and later as a research biochemist in the Department of Medicine.
"Michael is a terrific addition for our Biosciences Group here," commented Lynn Pasahow, Chair of the firm's Biosciences Practice. "His deep knowledge of the technologies and business issues important to clients in the biosciences arena, combined with his outstanding patent prosecution skills, will assure our clients receive outstanding patent prosecution services. Patent prosecution will continue to be at the heart of the strategy of most biotechnology companies for the foreseeable future, and we are thrilled to welcome Michael to head this effort."
"Fenwick's technology reputation, its deep understanding of intellectual property issues in general and patent issues in particular, offer me the best platform I can imagine," remarked Shuster. "I am especially excited to be working with Lynn Pasahow again. Fenwick has quickly grown to be a major force in bioscience and patent legal issues. There is simply no better law firm at which to build my practice."
Shuster received his B.A. from Brandeis University in 1981, magna cum laude as well as a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1986. He received his J.D. cum laude from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1996.
