January 22, 2001 (Palo Alto, CA) - Building on 2000's rapid growth at all levels of the firm, Fenwick & West LLP today announces that Brian Kelly, 32, has joined the firm as a partner in the Licensing and Online Commerce Group. The addition of Kelly underscores the importance of senior legal talent in negotiating increasingly complicated licensing transactions and the firm's commitment to providing their clients with integrated corporate and licensing expertise. Kelly will be resident in the firm's Washington, D.C. office, but will also work out of the Palo Alto and San Francisco offices on a regular basis.
"Brian is coming on board at a crucial time for us," explained Licensing and Online Commerce Group Chairperson Lisa Kenkel. "Our group now stands at 9 partners and 41 associates - which I think reflects our dedication to ramping up our licensing practice to handle the sheer volume of transactions and to address the fact that licensing agreements have become a fundamental strategic business tool for many of our high tech clients. Brian adds the type of experience in this area that will allow us to provide our clients with the full range of services - whether they are growing their business through M&A or through key licensing deals."
The move to Fenwick also represents something of a homecoming for Kelly. He initially joined the firm in 1996 as an associate in the firm's Intellectual Property Group and left the firm in 1999 to move closer to his family in North Carolina. His ties with the firm and the Bay Area remained strong, however, and the ability to focus on licensing out of the Washington, D.C. office ultimately provided the incentive to return to Fenwick. "I'm obviously very excited to be back at Fenwick," remarked Kelly. "Their outstanding high technology client base provides a great platform for me. I'm looking forward to growing this area of our practice and to growing our Washington, D.C. office - and it's wonderful to be working with my old colleagues again."
Kelly is a 1993 graduate of the Duke University School of Law, where he holds both a JD and an LLM, and a 1990 graduate of the University of Georgia. He comes to the firm from the Business Group of Charlotte, North Carolina's Moore & Van Allen, PLLC. He has counseled clients such as Intuit, Inc., Cisco Systems, Inc., and Epicentric Inc. with regard to complex legal issues surrounding the creation and protection of intellectual property rights, Internet and electronic commerce operations, and the structuring and negotiation of software development, distribution and other agreements that are of crucial importance for high technology companies.
