June 9, 2010 (Mountain View, CA) – Fenwick & West has announced that Mark Porter was recently appointed as Chair of the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California, beginning on September 26, 2010. Mr. Porter is Of Counsel in the firm's Corporate Group. He previously served as the Vice Chair for Member Services of the Executive Committee and as Chair of the Business Law Section's Insolvency Law Committee.
The Business Law Section has over 8,000 members and 14 standing committees. These committees focus on legal topics and industry sectors, including agribusiness, consumer financial services, corporations, cyberspace, financial institutions, franchise, health, insolvency, insurance, nonprofit and unincorporated associations, opinions, partnerships and limited liability companies and the Uniform Commercial Code. The Business Law Section furthers the practice of law in California through the activities of these standing committees, which include educational programs, legislation and publishing guides, and opinion reports.
Mr. Porter has experience counseling technology companies in a broad range of corporate and commercial matters. He has represented parties in over 50 completed mergers and acquisition transactions with aggregate transaction values in excess of $3.5 billion. During his career, Mr. Porter also practiced as a bankruptcy attorney, representing various parties in liquidation and reorganization of businesses. He continues to advise financially troubled companies on the fiduciary duties of their boards and on other issues which confront them in liquidation planning and winding up their affairs. He is a co-author of the treatise Sales and Mergers of California Businesses, (Continuing Education of the Bar California 2002).
