Mountain View, CA (May 14, 2015) – Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that patent litigation partner Saina Shamilov has been selected by Silicon Valley Business Journal for inclusion in its 2015 list of Silicon Valley Women of Influence. The list includes women in business across a multitude of industries who the Journal notes "rock" Silicon Valley.
Citing Shamilov as “a star in the world of intellectual property litigation,” Silicon Valley Business Journal highlighted her role in successfully defending Amazon.com and Zillow in patent litigation cases. Shamilov represents clients in numerous technological fields across the IP litigation spectrum. She has experience with all aspects of litigation, including summary judgment, trial and appeal, and has successfully represented clients in jurisdictions around the country, including the Northern District of California, Central District of California, District of Delaware and Eastern District of Texas.
Shamilov told the Journalthat her pre-law school background as a software engineer has made her a more effective advocate for her clients, which range from “early stage start-ups to industry leaders."
Having a technical background allows me to better understand my clients’ technologies and translate difficult technical issues into arguments that are understandable and compelling to judges and juries,” she said.
The Journal also heralded Shamilov's work leading a pro bono team that won a preliminary injunction ordering a prison to provide an ill California inmate with a medically appropriate diet.
“I receive tremendous satisfaction doing pro bono work for those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to justice," she said.
The Journal noted Shamilov’s role leading Fenwick’s Women’s Leadership Initiative, which helps give women attorneys access to leadership opportunities and mentorships and has been recognized by Euromoney as among the best in the country. Additionally, Shamilov serves on the board of the Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services, which she says "helps keep the local community's most vulnerable residents from falling through the cracks" through providing pro bono legal services.
Shamilov credited her mother with giving her the best advice she ever received. To wit: “Be better, do better than you think you can and never give yourself an option to give up.”
She also offered her own advice: “Do not doubt yourself, but periodically access your goals to understand whether they are still right for you.”
