Fenwick & West was founded in 1972 in the heart of Silicon Valley—before “Silicon Valley” existed—by four visionary lawyers who left a top-tier New York law firm to pursue their shared belief that technology would revolutionize the business world and to pioneer the legal work for those technological innovations. In order to be most effective, they decided they needed to move to a location close to primary research and technology development. These four attorneys opened their first office in downtown Palo Alto, and Fenwick became one of the first technology law firms in the world.  MORE >

Patrick Premo, IP Litigation Partner, Recognized for Contributions to Silicon Valley Community, Honored with 2010 Pro Bono Services Award by the SCCBA

October 22, 2010 (Mountain View, CA) – Fenwick & West LLP is pleased to announce that Patrick Premo, partner in the Litigation Group and Chair of the Pro Bono Program, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the community by the Santa Clara County Bar Association (SCCBA). The prestigious 2010 Pro Bono Services Award was presented at the Bar Association's Annual Judges' Night Dinner held on October 19, 2010. The event is held to honor judges and attorneys for their dedication and contribution to the administration of justice and for their outstanding leadership.

Candice Greenberg, Executive Director of Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto said "Pro bono legal work by large firm attorneys has not always been a popular concept. Long before other firms in the area, Patrick Premo and Fenwick & West saw the importance of providing pro bono legal services to low income individuals. Patrick and Fenwick's vision for justice and commitment to serving the low income community situated Fenwick to emerge as a leader of pro bono service provision on the Peninsula. Patrick's dedication to meeting the legal needs of the low income community makes him a well-deserving honoree, and we are proud to work with Patrick and Fenwick."

She also stated "Patrick Premo continues to lead Fenwick & West as a trail blazer, developing cutting-edge pro bono service models and creating a firm-wide culture that supports pro bono legal services."

"I am honored to be recognized by the Santa Clara County Bar Association with this prestigious award. We take great pride in our close affiliation with the SCCBA and will continue our efforts to further the SCCBA's top initiatives—diversity, pro bono and professionalism," said Patrick Premo.

Throughout his career, Mr. Premo has been actively involved in providing direct legal services to low income members of our community, working closely for example with the Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) offered by the Community Legal Services of East Palo Alto (CLSEPA) and aiding victims of domestic violence through the Pro Bono Project's Limited Scope Representation Project. Mr. Premo is currently working with Senior Adults Legal Assistance (SALA) on a pilot program to provide representation on the Elder Abuse Restraining Order Panel. Fenwick attorneys will be representing seniors at hearings to obtain temporary restraining orders to prevent elder abuse.

Mr. Premo has been chair of the firm's Pro Bono Program since 2005. In 2009, under Mr. Premo's direction, Fenwick logged over 11,000 pro bono hours representing nearly $5 million in legal services. In the last four years, he has worked to leverage the firm's resources and close partnerships with non-profit legal services agencies to co-sponsor over 20 training projects, attended by approximately 430 non-Fenwick attorneys, including many attorneys from in-house legal departments.

Earlier this year, Fenwick was honored with the 2009 Salsman Award, the highest honor awarded by the SCCBA. Fenwick was the first law firm in history to receive the distinguished award. The SCCBA recognized the firm's sponsorship on a variety of initiatives and its participation in diversity programs, such as The Bay Area Minority Summer Clerkship Program (BAMSCP), which secures employment for minority first year law students during the summer after their first year of law school. In 2006, Fenwick was honored with the award for "Excellence in Firm Diversity Efforts" for its service on and support of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Diversity.

On May 14, 2010, the firm also received the California Lawyers for the Arts' Artistic License Award in recognition of its ongoing assistance to struggling artists and filmmakers, particularly in the areas of copyright law and licensing.

About Fenwick & West

Established in 1972, Fenwick works closely with clean technology, life sciences and other technology companies that are changing the world through innovation.

For more than 30 years, Fenwick has served its community by offering legal services to persons and organizations that could not otherwise afford effective legal counsel. We recognize that providing legal services is not only an essential part of our professional responsibility, but also an excellent opportunity to gain valuable practical experience, learn new areas of the law and contribute to the community. As a result of programs like these, our firm has broadened the number of attorneys participating in our pro bono program. To encourage pro bono legal services, Fenwick recognizes all approved pro bono work as "billable" hours for all purposes for non-partner attorneys.
