Richard Dickson Elected Incoming Chair of Fenwick & West

Chair Gordon Davidson Continues Active Corporate Practice

Mountain View, CA (April 25, 2013) – Fenwick & West, a leading technology and life sciences law firm, today announced that Richard L. Dickson has been elected incoming Chair of the firm. Dickson is currently Chair of the firm’s Corporate Group, and has held leadership positions at the firm for more than a decade, when he was first elected to chair the firm’s Startup and Venture Capital Practice Group in 2002. Dickson has also served as a member of the Executive Committee since 2008, and is known for his strength in consensus building, sharp analytical skills and for embracing change and innovation. Dickson will become Chair effective January 1, 2014 and will work closely with current Chair, Gordon Davidson, during the transition. Davidson, who has served as Fenwick’s Chair for the past 18 years, will continue his active corporate practice on a full-time basis and will be an ongoing resource to the firm’s leadership.

“Richard is an extraordinary and universally respected leader in the firm, having spent the past 10 years in executive management roles,” said Gordon Davidson. “After three record years of performance for the firm, I couldn’t think of a better time to transition to a new Chair, especially since the change comes at a time when I’ll be actively engaged at the firm for many years to come. Our new Chair has accomplished remarkable things as a leader, creating an environment of consensus that has enabled us to maximize our collective strengths and foster innovation. Richard is a natural choice to lead the management of the firm.”

“I’m honored to be elected by the partnership to be our next Chair,” said Richard Dickson.  “Gordy is a visionary and a truly unique leader in the legal industry and in the Silicon Valley. I look forward to carrying on his tradition of mentoring and empowering new generations of partners and leaders, while also continuing my active legal practice.”

Fenwick has grown from approximately 150 attorneys in the 1990s when Davidson became Chair to more than 325 attorneys today, and during that time:

  • Firm revenue has grown from under $100 million to more than $260 million in 2012.
  • The firm’s service offerings have grown to cover all the core legal needs of technology and life sciences companies, including nationally-ranked practices with some of the nation’s leading corporate, intellectual property, litigation and tax practitioners.
  • Fenwick has been recognized for innovation in the delivery of legal services, including alternative staffing, alternative fee arrangements, sophisticated pricing and budgeting, and technology that improves both efficiency and client satisfaction in the delivery of our services.

“I’m excited and humbled to serve as Fenwick’s Chair,” concluded Dickson. “We are focused, efficient and have never had stronger legal talent. I look forward to continuing to build one of the most preeminent law firms relied on by technology and life science companies to handle their most complex legal and business issues, while remaining focused on our core values of superior client service and internal collegiality.”
