Robert Hulse Named to Silicon Valley 40 Under 40

Mountain View, CA (January 6, 2014) – The Silicon Valley Business Journal has named Fenwick patent partner Robert Hulse to its annual “Silicon Valley 40 Under 40” list, which honors 40 game-changing individuals under the age of 40 in Silicon Valley.

According to the Business Journal, “This ambitious group of people under the age of 40 is making its mark in technology, entertainment, security, health and finance. Their work has essentially revolutionized everyday living.”

Hulse, who helps leading technology companies build and protect high-value patent portfolios, has handled ground breaking patent work for some of the world’s most innovative companies, most notably Facebook, for which he serves as lead outside patent counsel managing the bulk of the company’s international patent portfolio.

His work with Facebook, which goes back to the company’s first-issued patent, includes writing several of the fundamental patents that have become basic social media features, including photo tagging, geo-tagging, virtual gifts, news feed features and the “like” button. Last year, Hulse also helped Facebook in its acquisition of AOL Inc.'s patent portfolio from Microsoft Corp. for $550 million.

Hulse's patent work extends well beyond Facebook, with clients ranging from big name companies such as HTC and Virgin Mobile, to dozens of noteworthy newer companies, including Flipboard, Livescribe, Chegg, RockMelt and Delphix. For DreamWorks Animation, Hulse patented a number of the company’s innovative techniques, including helping spider drones look more lifelike and, in “Shrek the Third,” also helping the hair appear more lifelike.

“I’m very fortunate to be able to work with companies and individuals who are breaking new ground every day,” said Hulse. “It’s exciting to be on the ground floor of the hottest new technologies and to write patents in spaces that, until recently, didn’t exist,” he added.

In just the past year, Hulse has been honored by a number of esteemed publications. He was named one of the Daily Journal’s Top 25 Intellectual Property Portfolio Managers in California, recognized as a national ‘Rising Star’ by Law360 and named a 'Top 20 Lawyer Under 40' by the Daily Journal. He has also been named in IAM Patent 1000’s World’s Leading 1000 Patent Practitioners and Euromoney's Life Sciences Stars.
