Sally Abel, Kate Fritz and Cindy Hess Named Top Women Leaders in Tech Law

Mountain View, CA (August 8, 2013) – Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that managing partner Kate Fritz, trademark chair Sally Abel and start-up and venture capital co-chair Cindy Hess have been named among the The Recorder’s list of the “Top Women Leaders in Tech Law.” The list recognizes attorneys who have “demonstrated leadership and expertise in solving the most pressing legal concerns tech companies can face.”

"These are the lawyers who get the call for that first, crucial funding round, the patent dispute only scientists can understand, the licensing-as-lifeline deal, the long-sought liquidity event," said Recorder editor in chief Greg Mitchell.

Sally Abel spearheads a world-class trademark group depended upon by some of the world’s most valuable and cutting-edge technology brands like Facebook, Twitter, Cisco, Pinterest, NVIDIA, Virgin America and Symantec. A well-known leader in trademark law with more than 25 years of experience in international trademark portfolio management and enhancement, Abel provides a wide range of trademark services, including trademark clearance, domestic and international registration, worldwide enforcement, licensing and internet/digital counseling for a myriad of clients. The International Who’s Who of Trademark Lawyers 2013 ranked her among the top three trademark lawyers in the U.S. – the only one of the three specializing in counseling and prosecution – and the top 10 trademark lawyers in the world.

As Fenwick’s managing partner, a role she has held for the past seven years, Kate Fritz has been regularly sought after for her perspective on the firm’s client-focused approach to pricing and budgeting legal services – including a stint on Bloomberg TV’s “Behind the Headlines” video series in March: How Facebook’s Lawyers Price Their Services. Fritz is also featured in “Facebook’s Friend – How Fenwick & West Landed the World’s Most High-Profile IPO,” American Lawyer cover story, June 2012; “Lawyers Scramble to Compete,” San Francisco Business Times, December 2012; “Finding next Facebook Starts with IP,” Silicon Valley Business Journal, January 2013; and “Lawyering 2.0: Shifting to a 'customer'-focused model,” Thomson Reuters Legal Current Podcast, April 2013.

From sought-after emergent companies developing disruptive technologies to established technology stalwarts, Cindy Hess counts some of the hottest and most innovative tech companies in the mobile, video, SaaS and social media spaces among her clients. In December, Hess represented GoPro in the $200 million cross-border acquisition of 8.88% of GoPro by Foxconn Electronics Inc., the world’s largest electronics manufacturing company. In ranking Fenwick in the first tier nationally in the “Venture capital and emerging companies” category, The Legal 500 singled out Hess as one of the “leading names in Silicon Valley.”
