Fenwick & West was founded in 1972 in the heart of Silicon Valley—before “Silicon Valley” existed—by four visionary lawyers who left a top-tier New York law firm to pursue their shared belief that technology would revolutionize the business world and to pioneer the legal work for those technological innovations. In order to be most effective, they decided they needed to move to a location close to primary research and technology development. These four attorneys opened their first office in downtown Palo Alto, and Fenwick became one of the first technology law firms in the world.  MORE >

Top Dealmaker Mark Stevens Returns to Fenwick & West: Brings Deep Business Perspective to Practice

May 8, 2003 (Mountain View, CA) - Fenwick & West LLP announced today that Mark C. Stevens is returning to the firm as a partner in the Corporate Group. Stevens, 43, will rejoin the firm officially on May 19.

"Mark returns to Fenwick & West with invaluable business experience in major technology companies where he was the principal dealmaker in transactions with an aggregate value of over $10 billion," commented Firm Chairman Gordon K. Davidson. "Mark brings with him a deep appreciation for the client's perspective that enables him to add value beyond pure legal advice. In addition to his superb legal skills, he will be unmatched as a business adviser to technology executives, entrepreneurs and investors in the Valley and across the country. We are thrilled that he is coming back home."

Ruth Kennedy, EVP and General Counsel at Electronic Arts remarked "I have worked with Mark for close to 15 years and continue to value his savvy and aggressiveness as a deal lawyer. Mark has acted as our lead in-house transaction attorney since late last year, and most recently handled EA's investment in and strategic publishing relationship with Digital Illusions CE, AB of Sweden. I look forward to continuing to work with Mark as he rejoins the team at Fenwick."

"I am very excited to be returning to Fenwick & West," said Stevens. "Not only is it a homecoming for me, it's great to be returning to a firm that has gained market share and continues to build momentum despite the economic downturn. Fenwick & West combines a cohesive and open culture with cutting-edge legal work for top-tier technology clients such as Cisco Systems, Electronic Arts, Intuit, Symantec and Veritas Software. When the technology market returns, Fenwick & West will emerge as a clear leader in high technology financing and business transactions. I can't imagine a stronger platform for me." Stevens started his legal career as an associate at Fenwick & West in 1983. His clients included key technology companies such as Electronic Arts, ONI Systems (acquired by Ciena) and Oracle, as well as investment banks including Morgan Stanley and venture capital firms including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

After practicing at Fenwick & West for 16 years, Stevens joined Excite@Home in early 1999 to become its Executive Vice President of Business and Corporate Development, where he led a group of more than 50 deal-making professionals. Since his departure from Excite@Home in late 2001, he has served as an independent consultant for several companies and a venture partner at a venture capital firm. Most recently he was the acting Vice President, Legal, Mergers and Acquisitions at Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS). He currently serves on the board of directors of Mercator Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCTR).

Stevens received his J.D., cum laude, in 1983 from Northwestern University where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served on the Law Review. Prior to attending law school, he worked as a software engineer. Stevens received his B.S., magna cum laude, in mathematics in 1979 from Santa Clara University.
