2010: A Record Year for Domain Name Dispute Arbitrations

April 07, 2011

April 7, 2011 (Mountain View, CA) – Jedediah Wakefield, Chair of the Trademark Litigation Group with Fenwick & West, was recently quoted in the National Law Journal article, "2010: A Record Year for Domain Name Dispute Arbitrations."

In 2010, there was a significant increase in arbitration cases surrounding improper use of trademarks in Internet domain-name registrations. In the past year, both The National Arbitration Forum and The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reported increases exceeding 20% for these domain name dispute filings.

Jedediah Wakefield notes that the economic recovery appears to be driving the upswing in cybersquatting cases. "A lot of companies now have the budget to enforce [violations] where they might have been holding off in the past," Wakefield adds.
