Fueled by significant increases in litigation and M&A work, Fenwick & West saw the greatest jump of Bay Area law firms in the 2005 AmLaw 200 survey. In total, 14 California firms were ranked on American Lawyer's list of the second hundred largest law firms in the United States.

In addition to healthy revenue growth in all practices, the firm's profits per partner make it the 53rd most profitable firm on the AmLaw 100 and 200 lists. "We were in the same range several years ago," stated firm chairman Gordon Davidson. He said the firm's jump was less extraordinary and more of a return to normalcy. In 2003, the firm incurred costs, including paying rent on empty space in Palo Alto, when it moved its headquarters from Palo Alto to Mountain View.
