Law360 Names Fenwick Practice Group of the Year for Capital Markets

Fenwick was named a Capital Markets Practice Group of the Year by Law360, and practice group co-chairs James Evans and Robert Freedman spoke with the publication about the significant initial public offerings and capital markets transactions the firm has done for technology and life sciences clients.

In addition to guiding one of the year’s largest tech IPOs—Peloton’s $1.2 billion offering—Fenwick also handled Bill.com’s IPO and represented the underwriters in Cloudflare’s $525 million IPO. In the life sciences sector, the firm steered Morphic’s $103.5 million IPO, Stoke Therapeutics’ $163 million IPO and Adaptive Biotechnologies’ $345 million IPO (underwriter representation).

Evans noted Peloton was Fenwick’s first significant IPO in the New York region, and talked about how the firm’s strengths include having attorneys who are highly creative problem solvers and have technical backgrounds, while strictly focusing on the legal needs of the technology and life sciences sectors.

Representing Morphic in its IPO work was also significant, Freedman noted, because it showed Fenwick could compete against larger law firms.

“It shows where Fenwick’s practice is headed, both geographically—the fact that we can pitch anywhere in the country and potentially win the IPO work—and that people now know us,” Freedman said.

He added that the group’s work is more than just headline-grabbing IPOs and that it is by nature collaborative, with strong contributions from litigation, tax and licensing specialties, among others.
