Fenwick Alumnus Douglas Luftman Profiled on Most Innovative Corporate Counsel List

October 03, 2011

October 3, 2011 (Mountain View, CA) – Former Fenwick & West attorney Douglas Luftman was recently profiled as part of Law360's "Most Innovative Corporate Counsel" List. Since leaving the Firm, Doug has continued to work closely with Fenwick, working together to build the intellectual property portfolio at Palm.

Now Chief Patent Counsel and Vice President with CBS Interactive, Doug was selected by Law360 from over 120 nominees for their inaugural Innovative Corporate Counsel List. He was recognized for his unique approach to working with outside counsel, his innovative use of technology, as well as his ability to build billion-dollar patent portfolios.

As head intellectual property attorney for Palm Inc., Doug strategically developed an in-demand patent collection that sold, along with the rest of the company, for $1.2 billion, with most pointing to the portfolio as the focus of the sale.

Doug commented, "Patent strategy is not about just buying a bunch of patents. When you work in-house, it all comes down to it being a business and you have to show a return on the investment."

At CBS Interactive, Doug is again using his in-house team, along with outside counsel, to creatively develop new intellectual property and expand on existing patents. Doug drives innovation through brainstorming sessions and coordination of disparate departments.

"He's not going to take the path of least resistance," said John T. McNelis, Chair of the Patent Group of Fenwick & West. "He's looking to make a difference in the company, and to do that you need to go out and take on additional responsibilities."
