Fenwick Nabs Ex-Dechert Life Sciences Pro for IP Practice

The addition of patent partner Daniel Becker to Fenwick & West’s life sciences group was covered by both Law360 and The Recorder.

"I wanted to be at a firm that was more connected with Silicon Valley," Becker told The Recorder. "I mean why be in Silicon Valley if you're not focused on innovation? And if you're focused on innovation, why not be at Fenwick?"

Becker, who brings more than two decades of experience in all areas of patent counseling, will serve the firm’s pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients. He offers valuable technical understanding gained from his medical degree, noted Law360.

“Dan is a tremendous addition to our thriving life sciences practice,” said Fenwick Chairman Richard Dickson in a statement quoted by Law360. “His deep technical knowledge and experience will be a tremendous asset to our biotechnology clients, an area of rapid growth for Fenwick.”

Becker told The Recorder that new patent office proceedings present difficulties for clients. Larry Granatelli, chair of Fenwick’s intellectual property practice, said he had confidence in Becker’s ability to handle these issues.

“Recent changes in the law and court decisions have brought significant challenges to what constitutes patentable subject matter and has expanded the remedies available through the patent office post grant,” he said, in a statement quoted by Law360. “Dan is versatile and well suited to advising and helping clients navigate those changes.”
