Fenwick Honored with Guardian of Justice Award from Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County

Award Recognizes Fenwick for Commitment, Creativity, and Diligence of Pro Bono Work

Mountain View, CA (June 2, 2017) — Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that the firm has been honored for its pro bono work by the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo. The organization gives the award each year to recognize the law firm whose commitment to Legal Aid is steeped in a commitment to justice for the children, families and seniors in San Mateo County.

Over the past year, Fenwick lawyers have helped survivors of domestic violence obtain permanent restraining orders against their abusers, advised tenants being evicted at housing clinics, counseled immigrants at Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) clinics and advised Legal Aid on cybersecurity issues.

The firm’s lawyers, patent agents and engineers have also volunteered at citizenship and naturalization clinics throughout the Bay Area and advised seniors at the monthly “Share of Cost” clinics held at Legal Aid’s Health Consumer Center.

“Fenwick is truly deserving of this award,” said Stacey Hawver, executive director at the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo. “The firm is dedicated to supporting low-income members of our community, providing them with important legal services that can help stabilize their lives. Their committed service demonstrates the powerful impact generated when law firms and nonprofits collaborate.”

“We appreciate all that Legal Aid does to serve the San Mateo County community,” said partner Pat Premo, chair of Fenwick’s Pro Bono Program. “Partnering with them to help those who desperately need access to legal services is extremely rewarding. We’re deeply honored by this recognition.”

Volunteers from Fenwick provided over 700 hours of legal assistance to vulnerable San Mateo County residents in 2016.

As a firm, Fenwick places great value on pro bono work. Fenwick’s pro bono program includes civil rights, child advocacy and asylum work, as well as impact litigation. In the past three years, Fenwick lawyers have logged over 50,000 pro bono hours valued at over $20 million in fees. Last year alone, the firm donated more than 19,000 hours valued at more than $9 million.

Fenwick was recognized at an awards luncheon on April 21, 2017, in East Palo Alto, California.
