Fenwick Adds Executive Compensation & Benefits Partner Matthew Cantor in New York

New York, NY (May 30, 2018) – Fenwick & West announced today that Matthew Cantor has joined the firm as an executive compensation partner in its New York office, further enhancing the firm’s executive compensation practice nationally.

Cantor joins Fenwick’s executive compensation and benefits practice, where he will counsel clients on matters in connection with the firm’s startup, securities and M&A practices. He also regularly advises both public and private companies on designing, implementing and disclosing equity and cash incentive compensation and retention programs, and negotiating executive employment, separation and change in control arrangements.

“As tech companies look for creative ways to retain and reward talent, our compensation and benefits practice has become substantially more complex and demanding,” executive compensation and benefits group chair Scott Spector said. “We’re excited to welcome Matt to the Fenwick team—he’s a talented and experienced compensation and benefits practitioner with a sterling reputation who adds local knowledge and counsel for our clients in New York.”

“With new legislative and regulatory changes, enhanced investor activism and the active IPO and M&A markets, our clients are increasingly focused on executive compensation,” said Alan Smith, corporate practice chair at Fenwick. “Overall, our M&A and emerging companies practices continue to see strong demand, both nationally and in New York. We will continue expanding the depth and breadth of our practice offerings in New York, with a continued focus on the needs of global technology and life sciences companies.”

Prior to joining Fenwick, Cantor spent nearly 10 years at one of the largest 100 law firms globally. He received his law degree from University of Pennsylvania Law School and his undergraduate degree from University of Illinois, and is admitted to practice in New York.

“Fenwick’s well-respected executive compensation and benefits practice is central to the firm’s focus on serving tech and life sciences clients,” said Cantor. “I’m thrilled to join Fenwick’s growing New York office and to work closely with the startup, securities and M&A practices.”

Fenwick opened its New York office in 2016 to address growing client demand from the area’s technology, life sciences and investment communities. The office has more than doubled in size since opening, including through lateral partner additions Ian Goldstein, Ethan Skerry, Jeff Greene and Jim Koenig. The firm recently announced plans to move its New York office to 902 Broadway in the Flatiron district, the hub of New York’s technology, startup and venture capital community.
