Overview

Jake Handy chairs the Technology Transactions practice (part of the Intellectual Property group) at Fenwick & West. He focuses his practice on technology-based transactions, including intellectual property acquisitions and licensing strategies for life sciences and technology companies. Jake is consistently recognized as a leading licensing and technology transactions lawyer by The Legal 500. In 2018, IAM Patent 1000 ranked Jake among the top transactions practitioners in California and in 2017, he was honored for his patent transactions work by IAM Strategy 300, who described him as an “experienced, extremely business-savvy and efficient lawyer who represents great value.”

Jake’s representative transactions include: development, collaboration, license and material transfer agreements for a broad range of life science technologies including antibody, protein expression/modulation, gene therapy, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics technologies; software, telecommunications and IT agreements, including technology development, licensing and marketing agreements; clinical trial agreements; and supply, distribution, sales representative and other supply-side agreements for biopharmaceuticals, diagnostic, medical device, telecommunications and software products.

  • Invenra in its collaboration and license agreement with Exelixis
  • Loxo Oncology in its collaboration with Bayer valued at up to $1.55 billion
  • GRAIL in its definitive agreement to combine with Cirina
  • Sutro Biopharma in its collaboration and licensing agreement with EMD Serono
  • Calico in its novel collaboration with AbbVie

During law school, Jake was the Associate Editor for the Law Review. While at the University of California at San Diego, he was the recipient of the NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training in Exobiology Graduate Fellowship. 

Prior to joining Fenwick, Jake was a partner and head of the Southern California Life Sciences transactional practice for DLA Piper LLP, and prior to that, an attorney at Morrison & Foerster LLP and Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP.​
