Fenwick & West to Open Shanghai Office

The opening of Fenwick & West's office in Shanghai, China was featured in an article in The Recorder, which quotes Fenwick corporate partners Eva Wang and Gordy Davidson.

Wang came to Fenwick in May 2013 to lay the groundwork for the office she now leads. With five corporate lawyers now joining her in Shanghai, Fenwick’s China practice has expanded to 20 attorneys, The Recorder reported.

Fenwick’s focus on technology companies and its commitment to entrepreneurs attracted Wang to the firm, she said. She advises Chinese technology companies on U.S. corporate and securities law and also works with American companies doing business in China.

Davidson told The Recorder the firm had been working locally through Chinese law firms and thinking about opening an office in the country for a decade. The timing was inspired, he said, by "a rapid increasing in the volume of work."

The firm has worked on transactions involving a number of China-based technology companies, including the pending $3 billion buyout of video game operator Giant Interactive and Spreadtrum Communications’ $1.78 billion sale to Tsinghua Unigroup. Another long-standing client is Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., which Fenwick represents as one of its principal outside U.S. intellectual property counsel.
