Joseph (Joe) Newman concentrates his practice on technology transactions and privacy matters that support clients in the technology industries, in particular for the interactive entertainment industry. Joe has extensive experience advising companies on data governance and information security strategies for navigating the privacy landscape and mitigating risk. He has helped manage global privacy compliance programs and led teams, both foreign and domestic, in privacy issues involving GDPR, COPPA, CCPA, Safe Harbor, government requests for data, data breach notification, and U.S. and international anti-spam laws.

Prior to joining Fenwick & West, Joe was senior legal counsel to Ubisoft, where in addition to implementing a global GDPR compliance plan, he led the company’s North and South American privacy efforts. Before that, Joe served as privacy and consumer protection counsel to Electronic Arts, where in addition to privacy, he handled consumer protection, e-commerce, gambling, advertising, CVAA and esports issues for the company. Before working in-house, Joe served as a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

While attending law school, Joe was an articles editor for the American Intellectual Property Law Association Quarterly Journal and received the 2013 Jan Jancin Award, Peter D. Rosenberg Award and 2012 Marcus B. Finnegan Prize for his contributions to the field of intellectual property law.​​
