Jon McMichael named a Law360 Rising Star

Partner Jon McMichael has been named a Law360 Rising Star, recognizing groundbreaking work on precedent-setting litigation matters that resulted in significant trial verdicts for clients, overturned decades of International Trade Commission precedent, and reshaped where patent lawsuits may be filed.

An interview with Law360 highlighted McMichael's efforts in Lashify's $34 million verdict against a foreign competitor accused of flooding the U.S. market with infringing products—and a subsequent win at the ITC that overturned the Commission's longstanding practice of excluding certain U.S.-based operations from its domestic industry analysis and opened the door for American technology companies to seek relief at the country’s borders.

"It was all part of this campaign on the enforcement side for a small, very innovative client," he told Law360. "The combination of all that is what I see as the biggest case and the biggest wins I've had."

McMichael was also instrumental in obtaining a key Federal Circuit decision in In re: Cray Inc. that reshaped where infringement suits can be filed.

"It's a case that I now think about in every single matter I have," he said. "It's one of the more cited cases in patent litigation these days."

McMichael, who also has a degree in bioengineering, said litigating on behalf of tech and life sciences innovators bridges his two professional passions.

"Certainly, the engineering training is something I chose because of my interest in technology, and what I love about what I do is that I can use that basically every day," he said. "It lets me have one foot in the technology side and also one foot on the legal side in court. To me, it's the best of both worlds."

The Rising Stars award recognizes exceptional lawyers under the age of 40 whose legal accomplishments belie their age, according to Law360.
