Sophia assists in the drafting of U.S. and foreign patent applications for clients primarily in the technology and life sciences industries.
Prior to joining Fenwick, Sophia received a Master of Engineering in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley. On top of her master’s coursework in drug delivery, biomaterials, and more; Sophia earned a Tech+PLUS Certificate in Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Strategy. For her master’s capstone, she completed a project that aimed to tailor Google patent database searches using machine learning techniques. She also ran the Inclusive Technology Affinity Group for the Fung Institute during her master’s program.
Sophia has extensive experience working in a synthetic biology research lab. During her undergraduate years, she worked in the UC Santa Cruz iGEM Synthetic Biology Lab on several humanitarian-focused projects, the first of which aimed to engineer cyanobacteria to produce acetaminophen, a vital medicine. In her third and final year of undergrad, Sophia led the UCSC iGEM 2020 team to win gold by working with her team to design a bacteria that could produce a biodegradable thermoplastic for agricultural applications. Sophia additionally studied bioinformatics at UC Santa Cruz, and has experience with several coding languages.
