Fenwick’s Tyler Newby Honored as One of California’s Top Cyber Lawyers by Daily Journal

Fenwick's privacy and cybersecurity co-chair Tyler Newby has been named among the top cybersecurity lawyers in California by the Daily Journal.

Newby focuses his practice on privacy and data security litigation, counseling and investigations, as well as intellectual property and commercial disputes affecting technology and consumer-facing companies. He has an active practice defending companies in consumer class actions, state attorney general investigations and federal regulatory agency investigations arising out of privacy and data security incidents.

Newby told the Daily Journal that Fenwick’s expanded privacy and cybersecurity practice consists of a cross-disciplinary team of lawyers, as well as former industry privacy and cybersecurity officers, who extend the standard range of legal, technical, forensic and compliance services traditionally offered by law firms.

“We really started building out a unique practice. We have team members who are former chief privacy officers, some with audit backgrounds, who can bring deep industry experience to bear,” Newby said.

The combination of on-the-ground industry experience and deep legal knowledge enables Fenwick to provide clients with practical, actionable guidance.

“Our advice isn’t just a memo that gets buried in an inbox somewhere,” Newby said.

Newby also emphasized the need for privacy teams to be forward thinking.

“There are increasingly complex state laws and foreign statutes, and even small startups have global footprints now. We’re trying to anticipate what our clients’ needs will be in the coming years,” he said.

The DailyJournal highlighted some of Newby’s noteworthy work over the past year, including representing the world’s second-largest advertising network, India-based InMobi, in litigation around the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
